You are moving to Munich with kids but you will have problems in caring for them during working hours there? Below you can find an advice subdivided into different age groups where your children are provided with  professional day care.

a) Infants from 0-3 years:

  • (integrative) nursery: In the recent years nurseries got more and more popular in Germany. A new draft law assures every full-time working parents a nursery place.
  • Home for kids: cooperation institution for families suited for immigrants because of their integration work
  • childminder (‘Day – Mothers/ Grandmothers’): often provide daycare in their own homes
  • babysitter: charge an hourly fee to look after children, often advertise their services on notice boards found in supermarkets or kindergardens

b) Children from 3-6 years:

  • kindergarden: Registration for a place in a kindergarden usually takes place in spring. If the kindergarden, the parents (and the child) agree, the child can stay either in the morning from 8am till noon and/or in the afternoon from 2pm to 5pm. Kindergarden costs vary: state-run kindergardens cost between 70 and 120 Euro a month; private ones between 150 and 200 Euro. For those parents who need all-day childcare, there are some all-day kindergardens where your child can stay from about 7am to 5pm. But it’s difficult to find a spot at these places, simply because they are few in numbers.
  • ‘hort': for those of you who were not able to get a place in all-day kindergardens but need a full-time care for their children the so-called ‘hort’ might be a possibility. They stay open all afternoon, and social workers provide lunch, help with the homework and organise games and excursions.

c) Children from 6 to 10-/12 years:

  • ‘hort': explanation above
  • ‘Mittagsbetreuung’ at school: An offer from the school where full-time working parents can register their children. It resembles the horte its only differences are that the ‘hort’ is a private institution and the mid-day care an offer from public schools which often do not last longer than 3 pm.
  • Full-time schools/ Day care at schools: As there only exists a small number of full-time schools around Munich it’s difficult to find a place.
